News: A Dream Team for African Cashew! - Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is funding a major project to improve the African cashew industry and FairMatch Support is one of the implementing partners.
Africa is responsible for 40% of world's cashew supply. However, processing is mainly being done in India and Vietnam. This means the product is leaving the continent as raw material and no value is added in Africa There are a few initiatives that have introduced processing in Africa. Global Trading, a Dutch broker, has been working on this local value addition for the past 10 years.
Nevertheless, the margins in the industry are very tight and labour conditions are poor.
The Fairtrade Market is booming and requesting for several new products and is looking for volumes. Putting the cashew chain under fairtrade conditions creates a new competitive advantage in the market and it stimulates the growth of processing in Africa.
Therefore, FairMatch Support implements a programme with Global Trading to start up new supply chains and convert current supply chains into fairtrade.
